CONCRETE COUNTERTOP FACTS
Your countertops were custom created by hand for your home. Unique individual characteristics will be distinctive to your countertops and no two will be alike.
Your countertops have been sealed to provide a primary layer of protection to the concrete surface. Sealing concrete countertops makes them stain resistant. It is still best to clean up spills as soon as possible since concrete is a porous material. Oils and acids, such as lemon and vinegar can penetrate the sealer. Liquids such as red wine, juice and oils can stain the concrete and substances such as citrus and vinegar can actually etch the surface. Regular maintenance will prolong the life of the concrete surface. You will know that it is time to re-seal when liquids no longer bead up or you can see worn spots.
There are two types of sealer: One seals the concrete's pores, allowing it to absorb fewer fluids, and the other coats the surface of the countertop to help protect it. Waxing with beeswax every few months will add a patina to the surface, and the wax will also help provide extra protection. Character marks or patina is a natural part of the concrete aging and will appear over time and circumstances. Use hot pads and trivets to protect concrete from extreme heat. Heat will damage the sealer, allowing more marks to appear. You will certainly need to use cutting boards as knives will mark and breach the sealer making it susceptible to stains and contamination. Obviously, using the concrete as a cutting surface will dull your knives.
Everyday cleaning can be done with mild soap and warm water on a rag or sponge or a natural, non-abrasive cleaner. A mild household cleaner such as Simple Green is acceptable for concrete surfaces. You should not use cleaners that could damage the countertop's sealant, such as bleach, abrasives or amonia.
May your countertops serve you well over time for years to come.
